Milk Substitutes

Water is the only beverage you can drink on the Daniel Fast, but it doesn't mean you can't still enjoy allowed foods in liquid form for cooking, baking, and meal replacement. Its very easy to make homemade milk, so I would suggest investing in a good blender. The most common milk substitutes include:
  • Coconut milk
  • Almond milk
  • Soy milk
  • Rice milk
  • Cashew milk

This is a good video tutorial for homemade nut milk- just omit the vanilla extract.

Here's how to use milk substitutes

Dairy substitutes for baking:

Feel free to substitute soy milk, rice milk or almond milk for milk. With most recipes, you won't even be able to tell the difference.

Dairy substitutes for cereal, oatmeal, and beverages:

Any milk substitute will work fine, so it's really a matter of personal taste.

Milk substitutes for cooking:

Unsweetened soy milk will work best in recipes such as pasta sauces, cream sauces, mashed potatoes, salad dressings, and other savory recipes that call for milk.

Replacing buttermilk:

If a recipe calls for buttermilk, add one tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of soy milk to replace buttermilk and mix well. It's not quite as robust as buttermilk, but it will have a similar flavor.
